We discuss bleeding complications from laser frenotomy and a case presentation demonstrating the risk of having injectable materials for breast augmentation. Do you know about the Choosing Wisely Campaign by the American Board of Medical Specialties?
Laser frenotomy is not without risk, and we present a published case demonstrating possible complications of the procedure. Injecting materials is a risky alternative to FDA approved breast implant placement for augmentation. We review a case that had disastrous complications during lactation. Lastly, we discuss the Choosing Wisely Campaign that helps patients choose medical interventions and procedures that are supported by evidence. We discuss examples of lactation-related practices that may introduce harm and need more evidence.
Recorded in March 2020.

Will providers preform frenotomy if baby did not receive vit K?

I cannot speak for all providers. It would seem ideal that an infant receive vitamin K before a frenotomy, since vitamin K deficiency increases the risk of bleeding.

In regards to Hyperbilirubinemia, at what level is a concern? It was mentioned that cases seen with kernicterus had levels of 40 or greater. At what level could it be causing brain damage? And possibly eye damage? Is there a risk to starting phototherapy before it is needed…like when the serum level is just below the threshold to start it? I’ve read about it possibly causing an increase in seizure activity if started early when it’s not needed. Is starting phototherapy early doing more harm than good?
